The Jerusalem Syndrome

I have this feeling again that Jerusalem hasn’t changed at all in the past 2,000 years. “Oh, this great teacher is coming tomorrow night, you should come and listen!” my friend shouts before I run out the door (the most famous in Jerusalem… but come early, it’s always so packed… it’s ok, if I don’t get in, we’ll just dismantle the roof or something) Voices: “I have no religion” “…there is a big prayer for healing…” “…I don’t know who I am, what I believe in, or which country I belong to…” “…you should come to this class…” “…oh, you are doing 40 days, please stay in my home any time…” “Let’s run to this class!” “We drank vodka with the rabbi until 2 am”

“It seems you’re not interested in dating?!” a radical left-wing PhD student wearing a kippah who lives between Ethiopian Church, Mea Shearim and some Christian gathering looks surprised…

“Is Russia Europe or Asia?” a security guard with a staff taken away from another unfortunate Jerusalem-syndrome-Jesus, asks me passionately at a control point. “See, idiot, I told you it was Asia!” he dismisses his colleague. Then runs off to man his post with the staff.

What is it about this place, that still has the spirit of a provincial village where you meet someone you know every day, that doesn’t have two people who can agree on anything for a long time, where patriarchs are at each others’ throats and stone-throwing post-prayer is a Friday special?

Some people complained to me that they lost their faith there. I don’t think so. I think they may have well lost their religion, if we see it as a set of rules and beliefs that excludes other rules and beliefs – but they have found something much more valuable than that. They have found the paradox. And some of us can’t live with it and run away, and shut it down, and some eventually embrace it. And it may be a long and painful process, for the stronger your belief system is, the more pain and fire it will take to burn all those old templates away. But knowing that you don’t know can be finally discovering wisdom, and acceptance of the Other can mean that you have finally found yourself. For in truth, all things are one…
