Many of us feel drawn to working with crystals for healing and spiritual growth. In this article, I want to take a deeper look at the nature of crystals from the perspective of both science and metaphysics, as well as awaken an appreciation for their wonder and magic.Â
What are Crystals?
Crystals are gemstones and rocks, gorgeous geodes that you buy at crystal fairs, pieces of quartz that you put on your altar… And so much more!
Scientifically speaking, what makes a crystal is a highly structured geometric pattern of arrangement of their ions, molecules or atoms. Atoms, molecules or ions in a crystal are organized in a regular grid pattern.
Another definition of a crystal is a solid with extremely well-organized molecular structure. Think, for example, of a snowflake. This is water that organizes itself into a crystalline pattern.
The word solid in the definition above is a little bit contested, because it is possible for a crystal to have a liquid state without losing its molecular structure. Many liquid crystals are used in information technology and the field of optoelectronics.Â
Types and Shapes of Crystals
Let’s begin with some science!
In traditional classification, there are 4 types of crystals:
– ionic (e.g. salt, zinc or sapphire),
– metallic (copper, gold or iron),Â
– covalent network (e.g. diamond, quartz, sugar),
– and molecular crystals (ice or sulfur).
Crystals grow, and use the natural elements to restructure themselves. For that reason, it is possible to grow crystals in a laboratory — hence man-made gemstones like rubies. Crystals also have specific habits of growing.Â
For example, copper, gold and silver grow in tree-like structures within the earth, forming root networks, called veins.Â
Amethyst, on the other hand, grows in concentric circles, which resemble the pattern of a tree trunk. Whereas hematite, a wonderful grounding crystal, sometimes grows in similar circles, and at other times in star-like structures.Â
Are Crystals a Form of Intelligence?
They grow, they form, they change and they store information. Are they alive, then?
Some of the lineages I am connected to would answer with a definitive “yes.” My ancestors believed that crystals breathe, know, and express the love of the Creator.Â
But of course their intelligence is not the same as that of human beings or animals, or even plants. The intelligence of crystals comes from their structure.Â
Think of graphite and diamond, for example. Both are made of carbon. Your pencil consists of exactly the same matter as the precious diamond in your ring (if you happen to have one).
But the crystalline structures of graphite and diamond are very different. While you can cut almost anything with a diamond, graphite is so fragile it breaks apart when your pencil is touching paper.
And the difference in structure is produced through pressure and interaction with the elements within the Earth.
If structure makes a difference between a pencil and a diamond, what about our body?Â
And our body has its own crystal magic!
Remember that the scientific definition of a crystal is that of a highly organized molecular or ionic structure.
We have tiny crystal particles in our cerebrospinal fluid and in our pineal gland. Both of these have been associated with consciousness in many traditions. These crystalline particles are highly structured, they store information and templates.Â
I believe that in our universe, memory and information is stored through structure. This is why many people who have direct access to the Akashic Field see it as a geometric code or a collection of patterns.Â
Our bones and teeth also have a crystalline structure. When you feel it in your bones, what does it mean to you? To me, feeling something in my bones indicates a deeply grounded structure, a deep longing, or an ancestral pattern that wants to emerge or dissolve.
Teeth have a crystalline structure and are traditionally associated with messages from the ancestors.Â
The Akashic Records as a Crystalline Mind
As I already mentioned, to me the Akashic Records are actually a code. More than this, I believe that the original language of the universe was geometric structure and patterns.
That is why some of the oldest cultures in the world, including my own ancestral Baltic culture, encode and transmit their knowledge in patterns and geometries.Â
If in your meditation you see symbols, structures and geometric shapes, you might be receiving information from the information field of the Universe, whether you call it the Akashic Records, or simply the Field.Â
And no, this information does not always have to be of the kind that feeds the thinking mind. We have many examples of the use of sacred symbols, such as Reiki, for healing and transmitting energetic information.Â
Crystals are intelligent beings because within their own structure they hold the pattern of the universe. The intelligence of billions of years. The universe was formed and still operates on patterns and structures. And crystals are the embodiment of that principle.
Crystal Earth Hypothesis
In 1974, Russian researchers proposed a theory that Earth was a giant crystal that had formed in space. Its shape was originally that of a dodecahedron, similar to a 12-pointed star. Gradually that crystal took on a more spherical shape, because matter tends to gravitate towards round shapes.
And then that crystal became Earth as we know it. But what it retained was the power places, where crystalline grids intersected. This theory, notably, was not a channeled message or anything coming from a New Age group. It was published in a subscription journal called Chemistry and Life.Â
And those zones where the crystalline grids meet may have geomagnetic anomalies, or be widely recognized as power places — such as the Giza pyramids.
Another hypothesis, which developed later, has been that the core of the Earth is a crystal. This theory was proposed by geologist David Stevenson in his deep Earth hypothesis.Â
His idea was that in the beginning, there was a structured crystalline shape at the center of the Earth, which is now an aggregate of many different crystals. And this structure holds both the memory of the Earth, the codes of the Earth.
How to Begin Working with Crystals
I do hope that what you have been reading so far inspired you to establish a relationships with crystals, our magical allies and the ancestors of our skeletal system.Â
Please know that crystal work is not New Age or a recent invention. Alchemists and sages of many traditions have worked with stones, including Hildegard von Bingen, Paracelsus, ibn Hayyan and many others.Â
Where to begin?Â
Some people are very connected to crystals and are what I would call “crystal empaths.” They may already know which crystals call to them and what to do in order to connect.
Whereas for others, it may take a longer time to establish a relationship with their own crystal allies.Â
If you are in the latter category, I suggest looking up crystal meanings or metaphysical properties. Another way is to see which crystal can assist you in what you seek: for example, in grounding, clearing energy, opening the heart, balancing the chakras, and so on.Â
After that, select a crystal to work with, and try the method that I describe in the audio file at the top of this post. Meditating with the crystal. Weaving with it.Â
You can wear crystals as a jewelry (such as bracelets or necklaces), or buy raw gemstones. For daily interaction and to work on a specific issue, I would suggest wearing a crystal on you most of the time.Â
From my own experience, I can recommend bracelets and necklaces by Otter Spirit, who also have options to select crystals by intention, chakras, or Zodiac signs that you want to work on.Â
