Have you had a relationship where the pull was so strong, the synchronicities so uncanny and the connection so deep that you wondered — could we be soulmates from past lives? Even if you didn’t believe in, or think about, past lives, it just seemed that meeting this one person awakened your deepest memories of love and completion. The warm, gentle, loving places in your heart that you didn’t know existed, came to life.
Is it possible to meet soulmates from past lives? And what does it mean for this lifetime?
Years ago, one of my teachers said that it was not only possible — it was almost certain that we already have a soul-level (past life) experience with anyone we meet in this lifetime. At the very least, you shared at least one past life with all significant people in your current lifetime.
Why? Because at this stage of Earth evolution an unprecedented number of souls have incarnated on our planet. We are a cumulative number of most of the souls that had lived here (and in other locations) before.
There are 8 billion people living on Earth right now. Compare this to 4.3 billion in the year of my birth, 1978. I remember my grandmother used to marvel when we reached 5 billion people in 1986. Not surprising, since when she was growing up in the 1920s, there were only around 2 billion people on this planet. At the time of Jesus, there were possibly around 190 million people on the whole planet Earth in total…
Exploring Past Incarnations
The first time I connected with some of my past incarnations, I was surprised to see all these completely separate personalities. Each one of them was a distinct person, with their own lives — and deaths. And yet, they looked onto the world with the eyes of a soul that I recognized. A soul that is now me.
I may identify with a very different “me” in a physical body, a me that is emotional and happy and sad, a me that has plans and ideas and feelings. But the eyes of a soul are timeless, dispassionate and yet ever-curious. The soul wants to learn and experience everything before it returns to the Divine ocean.
We can look at our past incarnations as dormant seeds of experience and lessons, which are still planted in our subconscious. The more evolved we become as a soul, the more such seeds we carry. The interesting thing that happens when we reach a certain stage of spiritual development, is that these cocoons begin to open up and get activated, becoming a part of our own inner voice.
This typically happens if the paths of our present- and past-life selves intersect in a physical location, especially if it is a power place. Power places are locations where higher states of consciousness are more easily accessible to us, where we can get spiritual downloads and activations almost spontaneously, simply by being there.
Examples of such places are Sedona in the US, Glastonbury and Stonehenge in the UK, Varanasi (also known as Kashi) in India, Jerusalem in Israel/Palestine, the Great Pyramid in Giza, Mecca in Saudi Arabia, and countless more, some world-famous, some known only to locals.
Soulmates from Past Lives: The Good, the Bad, and the Controversial
Meeting an important soul connection awakens subconscious memories of our past incarnations together. This awakening can be quite rough if there were unresolved issues (karma) between us in a past life. We will get flooded with feelings and emotions that belonged to our past selves.
Guilt, betrayal, longing, passion, joy — whatever tone your relationship had, whatever you chose to carry over through lifetimes — will all come into the light.
But past life memories of romantic feelings often harm us more than memories of discord and anger. What may have been a great love story in a past life, does not necessarily serve us in this lifetime.
Our past incarnations were completely different persons. They had their own set of life lessons and karma to work through. They were connected to specific ancestral lines to work with, and born into a particular culture. They spoke another language, had a different genetic makeup, which may have been an important factor determining choice of a life partner, and their beliefs and emotions were very different from ours.
It may be that in this lifetime we met someone who was once very special to our soul. Our past self awakens with a bang. Its memories fill us with its passion and excitement. This past life self is longing to repeat and re-live a lost love. A love that may have been truly divine — back then.
The problem is that all the emotions, hopes and desires we are now feeling belong to a different person. That person is not our enemy, and can even be our magical ally — but typically we don’t have a slightest idea this past life influence is even possible! Our past life self does not realize that in this lifetime their soulmate may have a completely different path. And we interpret its voice in our subconscious as our own.
When something like this happens, and people start looking for answers, they often find internet articles on twin flames and soulmates. These articles speak of eternal love, divine connection, and twin flames destined to be together forever. Of course this resonates immensely given all the past life memories.
Most of the painful, messy and unworkable “twin flame” situations come from this dissonance between current path and soul-level memories.
Past Incarnations as Our Magical Allies
This is not to say that every challenge in a relationship means it should be discarded as “unworkable”. On the contrary, I believe having a relationship of any kind with a person who is the exact opposite of us is the greatest gift from the Universe.
To have someone in our lives who challenges our routines, beliefs and ideals, our concepts of love and communication, our self-expression, who challenges every image we have created of ourselves and the reality — is a unique opportunity to rise above these images and evolve spiritually.
Maintaining such a connection, whatever form it may take, requires a high level of spiritual maturity and relentless dedication to do the necessary work on ourselves. As soon as we slip back into our egoic self, pain, arguments and breakups ensue.
But we need to be able to learn to control the voices of our subconscious, and control our past selves, rather than letting them control us. We can learn to get to know our past incarnations, to integrate their strengths, and to lessen their influence if it does not serve us.
Our past incarnations are parts of us who can teach us valuable knowledge and experience. But they are also very human and imperfect parts of us. Ultimately, our goal is to know them all, to integrate them, and to rise above their cacophony of voices, uniting with our Higher Self.
Sometimes, this also means facing the truth about our romantic ideals and letting go of our soulmates from past lives. Sometimes, it means fighting for them.
Interesting take. It occured to me that I might very well experience a “soul reunification” although the circumstances are terrible the result was needed, and it is not like most people would understand. I my case I had a dragon like creatures face appear before me in astral light. Which I said something like “come at me” and then I soon had the experience that for a space of three minutes I was being g inhabited. I spoke, “allister is a punk.” Spit out nicotine that was in my mouth and said “disgusting” drank a bunch of milk and then had an olfactory hallucination that the room was filled with incense and I was in a temple. Everything went back to normal and I was freaking out that I let something into my body by course of my loose words. The next day began a whole daytime hallucination of a pastlife the circumstances of seem to be have divinely set up for me. I had an old garden statue in the likeness of Mithra in my back yard to which my daughter would often touch the face of. My daughter is adopted and not even from the same continent. But, I got the surest sense that the idol had been used to sacrifice her to countless ages ago. The thought sickened me beyond belief. I spent the next night resolved to rid myself of the entity who I assumed was purely tricking me. I did what can only be described as a self exorcism In which I could see sigils leaving me in the astral light. The first few without much effort but that last one broke my me into two personalities, Alister and Adam and me. In the beginning stages I would feel a sensation moving up my arms when I started to speak the words (I spoke these words “leave me you have no legal claim I am purchased with the blood of Christ”). I was before this agnostic… At a certain point I started saying them in a recess of my mind I haven’t accessed since. I could think other thoughts and yet I was saying the words as if with my soul. When It was over and I got up my only test that it worked was the fact I was still saying the words, as prior I would lose track and have changed Jesus into John as if I was being hoodwinked. Anyhow, when I got up I realized that I had two personalities and Alister had infact come out of hiding and helped me. Oddly the dragon type face appeared again at a distance but this time with a cartoon face as if letting me know I won. I had a conversation with Allister about him hiding beforehand. I wasnt completely sure it was gone, but I and Alister spoke the words freely with our forgetting or change. This is the truncated version, too. I have the feeling that I did reunifiy fractured parts of my soul and some of them with less than exemplary history. I brought them to repentance so to speak. Or, maybe gave them the opportunity. I have conceived that the dragon was infact my egoic counterpart whom was running rampage in my life. I also have the feeling it did not like the nicotine and like sages often use it too heal it might have played a role in potentiating these events. Well hope this story wasn’t too out there.
